Fran Schnarr Remembered

Fran Schnarr died in December of 1991.

She was an enduring supporter of the Flushing YMCA, the Flushing Flyers Aquatic Club and Metropolitan Swimming. Fran was a member of the Flushing YMCA for many years and her children were members of the swim team. She served on the Board of Metropolitan Swimming as Secretary, Swim-A-Thon and Long Distance Chairperson. She also served on the Budget Committee and the Dinner Committee. Fran was a Certified National Official, High School and NCAA Official and a FINA Certified Open Water Official.

In the course of volunteering countless hours to both the Flushing YMCA and Metropolitan Swimming she touched thousands of lives. Fran's motto was, "We are here for the kids."

In remembrance of Fran's long time support of Age Group swimming and her far ranging involvement in Open Water swimming, Metropolitan Swimming has been pleased to have our Open Water Championships named for her. Her enthusiasm continues to reach out to those who never met her as well as those of us who were privileged to have shared a deck, a boat or table at a meeting with her.

Any profits from these events go directly to fund the Junior Athlete Representative to the annual USA Swimming Convention. This then prepares that athlete to represent all the Metro Athletes the following year when, as Senior Rep. he/she will vote on their behalf on matters ranging from elections to the budget to legislation.

As Fran would say, "Just get in and have a good time."
